Since the 1950’s, Italy has become a trendsetter, exerting
a vast influence on urban, industrial and fashion design.
Architects and engineers worked closely with local
craftsmen respecting a classic and artisan past.
A PowerPoint presentation will include examples from
architecture, furniture and fashion.
Dr. Rosanne Martorella will familiarize us with the innovative designs
of urban landscape and some innovative and whimsical
objects such as Olivetti’s typewriter and Piaggio’s Vespa.
Photos include the fashionable boutiques of Milan and Rome.

La Festa Dei Sette Pesci is a festive dinner
enjoyed on Christmas Eve by many Italian Americans.
The tradition of eating fish comes from the Roman Catholic
practice of abstaining from meat on the eve of holy days.
Come, dine with us, enjoy a seven-fish meal and learn more
about this iconic culinary experience. The feast includes
Caesar salad with white anchovies, fried calamari,
mussels in red sauce, sautéed scallops, grilled octopus,
linguini with white clam sauce,
Baccala Livornese and homemade biscotti.

followed by a presentation by Sarasota Opera’s
Costume Designer, Howard Kaplan, and ending with a surprise Finale of Singers

Luca Zingaretti, of Montalbano fame, stars as Judge Paolo Borsellino in the
docudrama, “The 57 Days,” depicting his attempt to overthrow the Sicilian Mafia in 1992.
Next, the elderly Marcello Mastroianni visits Italy’s mainland
to gather his adult children, named after characters from famous operas,
for one final “Felliniesque” family reunion in “Stanno Tutti Bene.”
Finally, the beautiful Ingrid Bergman lands on the bleak and forbidding
Island of Stromboli where her character experiences an
“existential” crisis. As the volcano erupts, she and Director Roberto Rossellini
engage in the “Scandal of the Century.”
