2021-2022 CALENDAR OF EVENTS
Rome: The Eternal City
Caravaggio & Artemisia’s Rome
Presentation by Dr. Chrystine Keener, Ringling College
Thursday, November 18, 2021 – 11-12:30 pm Selby Public Library
$20 Donation

This lecture will compare the paintings and personalities of two of the most iconic Italian artists of the Baroque period, Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio and Artemisia Gentileschi. Travel back in time to study Caravaggio’s compositions that defied 17th-century decorum with allusions to Rome’s seedy underground activities. Conversely, Gentileschi’s depictions of women, who judge and administer harsh punishments to the undeserving, challenged the stereotype of a female artist. Her dynamic paintings reflect what she wrote to a male patron, “You will find the spirit of Caesar in this soul of a woman!”
Rome: Sculpture & Architecture of Bernini & Barromini

Thursday, December 9, 2021 - 11-12:30 Selby Public Library $20 Donation

Although different in personality, they designed churches, squares, palaces, and mythological sculptures. As rivals and formulators of the Baroque style of architecture, their contributions lend much to the embellishment of Rome. Photographs are shown.

Wednesday, February 16, 2022 “Nights of Cabiria”

In this Fellini masterpiece, a naïve prostitute searches for true love in the seediest sections of Rome. Giulietta Masina, the "female Chaplin," shines in this episodic quest for real meaning. Francois Perier and Amadeo Nazzari join Ms. Masina . . . actually Mrs. Fellini . . . in this Academy Award winner for Best Foreign Film and Best Actress Award winner at the Cannes Film Festival in 1958.
Wednesday, March 23, 2022 “The Secret of Santa Vittoria”

Anna Magnani and Anthony Quinn star in this splashy and raucous account of a small Italian village’s attempt to hide 1,300,000 bottles of local wine from the invading Nazis. Variety Magazine dubbed this 1969 Technicolor spectacular “a knockout.”
