Caravaggio & Artemisia’s Rome
Presentation by Dr. Chrystine Keener, Ringling College
Tuesday, February 23, 2021 – 11-1 pm Selby Public Library $40/$55
Followed by lunch at Café Amici, Main Street, Sarasota
This lecture will compare the paintings and personalities of two of the most iconic Italian artists of the Baroque period, Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio and Artemisia Gentileschi. Travel back in time to study Caravaggio's compositions that defied 17th-century decorum with allusions to Rome's seedy underground activities. Conversely, Gentileschi's depictions of women, who judge and administer harsh punishments to the undeserving, challenged the stereotype of a female artist. Her dynamic paintings reflect what she wrote to a male patron, "You will find the spirit of Caesar in this soul of a woman!

Wednesday, January 13, 2021 “The Secret of Santa Vittoria”
Anna Magnani and Anthony Quinn star in this splashy and raucous account of a small Italian village’s attempt to hide 1,300,000 bottles of local wine from the invading Nazis. Variety Magazine dubbed this 1969 Technicolor spectacular “a knockout.”
Wednesday, February 10, 2021 “Anna”
This very rare film reunites the dynamic trio of Silvana Mangano, Raf Vallone and Vittorio Gassman. Silvana is again torn between her love for Vallone and her lust for Gassman. Here, Ms. Mangano shines in a dual role as Soeur Anna, a novice hospital nun, and her alter ego as a sultry night club singer. Capturing the never ending battle between the flesh and the spirit, this early 1950's gem directed by Lattuada introduced the songs "Non Dimenticar" and "El Negro Zumbon" aka "The Theme from 'Anna' ."
Wednesday, March 24, 2021 “Nights of Cabiria”
In this Fellini masterpiece, a naïve prostitute searches for true love in the seediest sections of Rome. Giulietta Masina, the "female Chaplin," shines in this episodic quest for real meaning. Francois Perier and Amadeo Nazzari join Ms. Masina . . . actually Mrs. Fellini . . . in this Academy Award winner for Best Foreign Film and Best Actress Award winner at the Cannes Film Festival in 1958.
Luncheon: Roman Circus Maximus
Thursday, March 11, 2021 – 12-3pm - Mattison’s 41 (Price TBD)
As SICE planned our events for this season celebrating Roma, we asked ourselves what does the beautiful Italian city of Roma and Sarasota have in common? The answer is:…..“THE CIRCUS”!
The Roman Circus Maximus was an ancient chariot racing stadium and mass entertainment venue which became the model for circuses throughout the Roman Empire. Our own city of Sarasota is known around the world as the home of the modern day circus.
This SICE event, Sarasota Circus Maximus, will celebrate both cities with a three course Roman inspired luncheon for you at Mattison’s 41 and with our own unique circus entertainment.
